I had the opportunity to connect with someone off the streets tonight. B popped in during the flurry of activity and chaos as we were sorting out the bread donations at the World Impact Cafe. It would have been so easy to miss her in the sea of people, busyness and noises but I’m grateful that she didn’t go unnoticed. B was doing it tough in life and hesitated stepping into the cafe because it seemed like a place where she felt like she might not fit in – everyone looked rich and altogether with happy comfortable lives or was dressed a way that appeared better. She even stood in a corner at first to avoid being in anyone’s way.
We chatted - not for long - but it was an opportunity to just look someone in the eye, be present, give them your time and actively listen as a priority amidst the demands of ministry and people wanting your attention. And I’m glad I did.
B left with a smile and 2 shopping bags laden with bread for her family of 7. She was so grateful and we also had the opportunity to pray for her. She left saying “I really needed prayer.”
This humble opportunity made me realise not to be so caught up in the activity FOR the people in the community that I miss it, when the people from the community actually comes INTO our midst. B hesitated at first to step foot into the church but she did because she was curious about all the activity and wondered what it was all about.
We might be gathering funds for Missions but our mission is just as much on the domestic front as it is for abroad. And WHAT we do and WHO we do it for is what matters most to God’s heart - people and their lives. And it’s all about Him!
