A few of us Christian staff at Monash University Clayton Campus have been rebuilding a network of prayer groups for university staff around the campus. We had our first prayer group meeting in February within our school (School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment) and we thought it a great idea to do this casually in the school's new rock garden. As we started talking about our school, the faculty and the university and what to pray for specifically, a distressed lady walked through the rock garden and walked up to us.
She asked for help to find the Arts faculty, which is at the other side of the campus. Because it was the first day of semester, finding a carpark was a major struggle and she had become really distressed because it took her so long to find a carpark and it was a long way from where she had her classes. She broke down in front of us. The two ladies in our group (one of them also goes to CityLife) tried to reassure her and helped her calm down; all I could do at the time was pray for wisdom.
It turned out this lady was a single mum with financial problems trying to do a degree to get qualified for her actual profession and she felt abandoned on all sides. The two ladies walked her to the Arts building and provided a listening ear along the way. The lady was happy for us to pray for her too, which of course we did. This really highligted to us that even at such a large institution as Monash, God is in control as he placed us right there at that time to be a helping hand to someone in distress.
