Message Summary: The 7 Signs in the Gospel of John

In the Gospel of John, seven miraculous "signs" are recorded. Each one reveals Jesus’ identity, authority, and mission. These signs point to deeper spiritual truths and culminate in the greatest sign of all—His resurrection.

1. Water into Wine (John 2:1–11)

Jesus reveals His power to transform by turning water into wine. This miracle shows that sometimes obedience comes before the miracle.

2. Healing the Royal Official’s Son (John 4:46–54)

Jesus heals from a distance, revealing the power and authority of His word. Faith in His word precedes the miracle.

3. Healing the Paralyzed Man (John 5:1–15)

Jesus asks, “Do you want to be made well?” Healing begins with a response of faith. Transformation starts with willingness.

4. Feeding the 5,000 (John 6:5–14)

Jesus multiplies a small offering to feed thousands, teaching that He is more than enough and the true Bread of Life.

5. Walking on Water (John 6:16–24)

Jesus shows His authority over nature and brings peace in the storm. His presence brings us safely to the shore.

6. Healing the Man Born Blind (John 9:1–7)

This sign points to spiritual awakening. Jesus uses earthly means to reveal heavenly truth—He opens blind eyes physically and spiritually.

7. Raising Lazarus (John 11:1–44)

Jesus shows that He is the resurrection and the life. He calls us to believe before we see, even when hope seems lost.

The 8th Sign – The Ultimate Sign – Jesus’ Resurrection (John 20:1–18)

Jesus’ resurrection is the eighth and ultimate sign—the sign that changes everything. It’s not just an event in history but an invitation to experience new life, freedom, and hope.

The Empty Tomb (John 20:1–10):

The stone rolled away symbolizes the removal of every barrier that separates us from God—sin, fear, shame, and death.

Mary Encounters the Risen Jesus (John 20:11–18):

Jesus calls Mary by name, turning her sorrow into joy. This personal encounter reminds us that resurrection is deeply relational.

The Call to Respond:

Jesus' resurrection demands a response. He invites us to "step out of the tomb," to leave behind grave clothes and live in His resurrection power.

Discussion Questions

1. Each of the seven signs involves some form of transformation (e.g., water to wine, sickness to health, death to life). How does the resurrection represent the ultimate transformation?

2. In the raising of Lazarus, Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” - How does this principle apply to Mary, Peter, and John at the empty tomb in John 20? - How does it apply to your life today?

3. The signs weren’t just demonstrations of power—they were invitations to believe. How is the resurrection inviting you to respond differently today?

4. Jesus called Lazarus by name—and Mary, too. - What might it mean for you that Jesus calls your name through the resurrection?

- What areas in your life still feel like a tomb that Jesus is calling you to walk out of?

5. Amanda said: “This is not the end of the story—it’s the beginning of yours.” What does that mean to you?

Prayer Focus:

- Thank God for the resurrection and the life Jesus offers.

- Pray for faith to believe before seeing.

- Ask Jesus to remove barriers and to bring new life in specific areas.

- Pray for boldness to live out the resurrection in everyday life.
