Valuing What God Values

Rob Nyhuis 01 November 2026

Values unite us by characterising who we are and how we act. The CityLife constitution defines this further with a statement of our beliefs and also of our mission. Vision describes what we see ourselves becoming (and an exciting new one is coming for 2027). Our mission, however, explains how we get to our goal. It is our core values, though, that describe the path we take. CityLife has just seven values, not because others would not be important, but because the seven are the essence of our unique identity. The 2027 ministry internship (https://app.citylife.church/ministry-internship/) is an example of a values-shaping context that develops growth through leadership and coaching.

Embracing values that call us to be Jesus-Centred and Spirit-Filled help us to appreciate our foundations. Being a welcoming church, too, reminds us that the arms of the Father are outstretched to embrace all, accepting us as we are but loving us too much to leave us as we are. God the Father, Son and Spirit work in us that we might grow and then inspire others to find the love and grace of God that we have experienced.

Questions

1. Read 1 Corinthians 11:1. What does it mean for others to follow you as you follow Christ? Who is following you and how are you becoming a more inspiring person to follow?

2. Read Matthew 16:18. What is the rock on which the Church is built? In what ways should a church be built upon the foundation of Jesus?

3. Read Luke 24:49. Why are followers of Jesus to be filled with power in order to serve Him? What does this look like in your own service of God?

4. What does a welcoming church look like? How should we graciously balance the acceptance of others with the need for them to grow in holiness once they encounter God?

5. Read Hebrews 9:1-5. How does the symbolism here reflect the nature of God as a Trinity? Why is it important that God be revealed in three persons who are distinct but indivisible? How do they connect to the values that characterise us as a church?

Reflection

What might it mean for you to live out the CityLife values such as being Jesus-Centred, Spirit-Filled, and welcoming? How is Jesus central to your daily choices and decisions? How are you living in the power of the Spirit to advance the Gospel? How is the welcoming heart of the Father reflected through you so that people might be drawn to Him as a result? Let the work of the Father, Son and Spirit stir you to passionate engagement with the advance of God’s kingdom so that other might better come to know Him through you.

Prayer

Lord, may I reflect your heart of mercy, grace and compassion to others who need to find you this week. May I be passionately and purposefully aligned to the values that characterise your Word and that connect me to my church family. May I row my boat against the current of the world around me as I pursue you, as I faithfully serve you, and as I bring others to the foot of the Cross.
