Each Thursday I visit my
mother, who is in a nursing home. She cannot hear and I communicate with her
through a whiteboard and marker. She is 93 years old and has always loved God
and been an active Christian and very intimate with the Father. We have been
told that she has advanced dementia. She is often sleeping when I visit due to
the amount of medications she is on and restless sleeps at night time.
Yesterday when I visited it was 26 degrees and a beautiful sunny day so I took her
out into the garden. She was drifting in and out of sleep so I decided to have some God time with her. I sang every Christian song I could think
of, including some of her favourite hymns. Then I prayed over her, thanking God
that he was the God of those who were growing old and for how he had chosen her
for his kingdom. I recited scriptures too. Her hand was tapping in time to the
songs I was singing even though she appeared to be asleep. Then she spoke in
tongues. I was so happy and encouraged that the Holy Spirit in her was
able to respond to her, even in her confusion and lack of hearing.
After this I
looked up to see a nurse hurrying after an elderly man who was making a bee
line for us. He used to be an ex pastor but now has advanced dementia. He obviously
heard the singing and scripture and wanted to join us. The Holy Spirit
connected with him. I felt I heard the Lord saying, "Let my people
come." The Holy Spirit is a power to reckon with. It can override any
difficulty, any mountain, any communication breakdown. Amen
