The Holy Spirit leads us to the feet of Jesus where we are both saved and discipled. Factors that interfere with our spiritual growth or well-being sometimes need supernatural deliverance. There can be unusual manifestations when the power of God clashes with demonic influence allowed by footholds of lie-based thinking, self-deception, addiction, curses, sin, witchcraft, and more.
Deliverance comes through four factors seen in the story of Luke 8:22-39. These are part of the structure, which is built with parallel verses and their contrasting ideas: Faith vs Fear (v. 22-26 vs v. 37); Being unclothed and demonised vs. being clothed and healed (v. 27 vs. v. 35-36); Coming to Jesus vs. running from Him (v. 28 vs v. 34); and Jesus having authority vs. the demons having none (v. 29 vs. v. 32-33). These all point to the central idea (v. 30-31) that demons face eternal judgment and are therefore powerless (as emphasised in Luke 10:19).
Discussion Questions
1. Replace apprehension with belief – Luke 8:37. Fear is often based on ignorance and a lack of faith, and this kind of fear was at the heart of the townspeople asking Jesus to leave them. Why are people sometimes afraid when they see the power of God at work today?
2. Invite God to transform us – Luke 8:35-36. The demonised man was healed. This word is more correctly (and originally) ‘saved’ and occurs in three different contexts within the chapter. Why is it important to note that God desires us to be saved in spirit (v. 12), soul (v. 36) and body (v. 48)?
3. Surrender to Jesus as Lord – Luke 8:28. The afflicted man was not really possessed but, rather, oppressed. Why is it important that he was able to come to Jesus freely, despite his oppression? What do you possibly need to surrender to Him, or confess, in order to receive your breakthrough?
4. Exercise godly authority – Luke 8:29. Jesus commanded the evil spirits, rather than just praying. How might we exercise similar authority today (as in Acts 16:18)?
Reflection
What might it mean for you to rise in Spirit-empowered deliverance as you:
Replace fear,
Invite God to transform,
Surrender to Him, and
Exercise authority?
